5 Reasons to Quit Your Day Job
May 6th, 2008 | Posted in The Day Job.Work is work and it usually sucks the life right out of you before you know it. You’re depressed and getting into a deeper depression the more you work at your current job. Each day you work hard, hate what you do and feel that there is no end. Need some reasons to quit? Here are five good reasons to quit your job today…
1. Lack of Appreciation
So you’ve just saved the company from losing yet another irate client threatening to go elsewhere, just finished a plan to improve productivity and you work hard to get the company to the top of its industry. Unfortunately, no one in upper management gives a darn about what you have accomplished. Even through recent attempts to show them how much of an asset you are, they never seem to take notice. Perhaps it’s time to say goodbye.
2. Too Little of Pay
When you started with the company you felt that your pay was just the amount everyone received during their initial grace period. Nearly two years later, you find yourself still in denial. If the company is booming with growth and your paycheck is still the same, ask for more or hit the road looking for something better.
3. Too Many Hours
Are you tired and stressed out? If you find yourself exhausted and in need of some R and R, then it may be due to your typical 65+ hour work week. Just remember that not every job is like this every week as you clock out for your 5 hours of sleep. Start looking at the classifieds.
4. You Hate What You Do
Sadly, many people are stuck in jobs that they absolutely hate. Do you want to be another statistic? First, start with a list of things you like to do and you feel that you could be good at. Can you do those things in your spare time working from home? If so, then start slowly on the side until things start to get better.
5. Freelance Work is Booming
If you have a freelance gig on the side that is doing well, you should do some hard thinking about your future. Can this gig support you financially? Will you always have a steady stream of income? If not, where will it come from? If everything looks good and is clearly planned out, take the plunge and start your own business.
And there you have it, five reasons why you should quit your day job. So if you are under appreciated, underpaid, hate what you do and work too much perhaps changing jobs or focusing on a freelancing career is the way to go. Happiness isn’t given, it is made. So make yourself happy and do something you like to do.

@Yannis - I hear you there.
@Ricky - As long as you like what you are doing and being responsible.

7. You have been forced to give up too much creative control or input. I found myself being asked to hire freelancers to do the part of the job that I most loved to do, so that I could be a project-and-people manager. I left to be one of the freelancers, and I’ve never been happier!

Completely agree… I left my job (even though I have mortgage to pay), started freelancing and just recently started my own company. I couldn’t see myself staying at the my old establishment without possibly growing an ulcer. *snicker*
